Where we started & Parentage
We were founded in Edinburgh , the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment. We're named after one of the leading lights of that era, Adam Smith, whose 1776 publication 'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations' revolutionised economic theory.
Although the Bank's headquarters are based in Edinburgh - one of Europe 's top financial centres and one that epitomises the fine Scottish qualities of shrewdness and probity - we have offices based strategically across mainland UK and the Channel Islands that serve a widespread UK and international clientele.
Parentage
Also behind the scenes, yet allowing us the freedom to operate independently, is our parent, The Royal Bank of Scotland. RBS is an enlightened corporate parent that lets us develop in our own inimitable way. But for our clients, as much as for us, there is of course the ultimate reassurance that we are part of one of the world's largest banks.
